A visit to Bosscha Observatory

Saturday-Sunday, March 25-26, 2023

Bosscha Observatory is a well-known historical site in Bandung, West Java. It features a range of telescopes, from tiny ones to massive ones. These telescopes help us observe celestial bodies that are invisible to the naked eye, making optical instruments essential. While Bosscha Observatory used to welcome the public, it’s currently closed. From what I’ve heard, it’s now only accessible to students conducting research or those with special permission to visit.

Alhamdulillah, my friends and I, who took an Astronomy class together, had the opportunity to visit Bosscha Observatory. Our visit aimed to see how the telescopes in Bosscha Observatory and also learn how to use the telescope.

The ride from ITB Ganesha Campus to Bosscha Observatory took us about an hour on our motorcycle. It was a bit of a tre, especially with the uphill roads, but once we got there, it was totally worth it. The place is really cool and stunning! 🥰🤗.

When we got to the spot, we were welcomed to check out the Bosscha Observatory and its impressive telescopes. From what I gathered, there are quite a few, including the Zeiss double refractor, Schmidt Milky Way, Bamberg Refractor, Goto, Unitron, solar, Stevia, and radio telescopes.

After our tour of the observatory, we had the chance to stay overnight in one of the houses on the property. Experiencing the night at Bosscha was something special. It gets pretty dark there since they keep the lighting to a minimum on purpose. If there are any lights, they’re covered so that they shine down instead of up, which helps keep the sky clear. This low lighting is really helpful for stargazing, as it reduces interference and makes the celestial views much sharper.

Here's some footage from the Bosshca Observatory 😍
