A visit to Bosscha Observatory

Saturday-Sunday, March 25-26, 2023

Bosscha Observatory is one of the historical and famous places in Bandung, West Java. Here, we can see various sizes of telescopes, from small to large. The function of the telescope is to see celestial objects that cannot be seen by the naked eye, so optical tools are needed.

Bosscha Observatory used to be open to the public but is currently closed. Based on the information I received, it is only open to students who want to conduct research or have special permission to visit Bosscha.

Alhamdulillah, my friends and I who took an Astronomy course had the opportunity to visit Bosscha Observatory. Our visit aimed to see how the telescopes in Bosscha Observatory and also learn how to use the telescope.

Our trip from ITB Ganesha Campus to Bosscha Observatory took approximately 1 hour by motorcycle. It was quite far and the road was also uphill, but it was worth it when we arrived at the location. The place is so cool and beautiful 🥰🤗.

Arriving at the location, we were invited to tour Bosscha Obsevatorium to see the telescopes in Bosscha. As far as I know, there are several telescopes, namely the Zeiss double refractor telescope, Schmidt Milky Way, Bamberg Refractor, Goto, Unitron, solar, Stevia, and radio.

After enjoying Bosscha Observatory, we were also allowed to stay at one of the houses in Bosscha. When staying overnight, we were able to see how the night atmosphere at Bosscha. It's unique and exciting, it is quite dark at night because it is deliberately given minimal lighting. If there is a lamp, a cover is given so that the light does not point to the sky but points down. Minimal lighting is useful. When observing celestial objects it is not disturbed by existing light and the results obtained are clearer.

Here's some footage from the Bosshca Observatory 😍
