Hanging out and learning with my 'Mengukir Asa' buddies
Assalamu'alaikum wr.wb.
It's been ages since I last chatted with my friends from mengukirasa.id.
Let me share the backstory of mengukirasa.id. I can still recall how it all started. Mengukir Asa is a community I established in response to some challenges in my village. One day, while chatting with parents, school teachers, Quran instructors, and other locals, I noticed a lot of concerns being raised. Many teachers and parents expressed frustration that even though the kids were in school, they were struggling to keep up with what was being taught, both in class and in the community.
This was a real challenge for me as a new educator, especially since my experience was mostly with kids in the city and overseas. Initially, I started offering free lessons at my home for kids interested in learning Calistung. However, I noticed that many were too shy to come over. So, I came up with a new plan. I thought, how can I get the kids to learn together with their friends? I reached out to the local Quran teacher since the kids in the village often gathered at her place for lessons. I asked her if I could teach in the mushola or at his house. Thankfully, she agreed, but with a catch. She wanted me to not only cover school subjects but also teach the kids about the Quran and Islam. I was totally on board with that!
I was really excited to have the chance to teach kids and bring some positive vibes into my life. At first, I handled everything myself, starting with the Quran and Islamic studies, and then I switched it up by teaching math, English, and other subjects. After a while, I realized it was a bit too much to manage alone, so I brought in two other teachers to help out.
I set up a schedule for classes three times a week, and we kept it going regularly until I had to leave to pursue my master's degree in Bandung. Right now, only the Quran teacher is still running the program, focusing solely on teaching the Quran and Islamic studies. The other two teachers are also busy with their own studies, so we haven't been able to team up again. I'm hopeful that once we finish our studies, I can jump back in and continue teaching.
