Program Hibah Bina Desa

Siginjai Technocraft

Technocraft (Creative Technology of Batik Motifs from Digital Photos) as an Improvement of Digital Batik Creative Industry Business in Ulu Gedong Village, Jambi City

Ulu Gedong Village is one of the largest batik centres in Jambi City, all of which have batik craftsmen who are still actively producing batik until now. Jambi batik is created in groups that still use traditional processes, and the batik motifs they make are obtained from generation to generation. The motifs include Durian Pecah, Kaca Piring, Puncung rebung, Angso duo with crown wings, Tampuk Manggis, Kapal Nyanggat, and others.

Based on surveys and observations from interviews with community leaders and craftsmen, people in Ulu Gedong produce a lot of written and stamped batik. The batik production process is made by housewives or home-based businesses. Meanwhile, many of the younger generations are not interested in continuing to make Batik like their parents did. This is because the process of making batik takes a long time, especially in written Batik. On the other hand, the motifs they make tend to be monotonous based on generations, causing a lack of competition with other regional batik motifs. This impact is thought to cause the level of economic factors and the welfare of craftsmen to be very low. So, the youth groups in the Ulu Gedong are looking for other, more promising jobs.

Based on the background of problems such as the weak community economy and competitiveness, taking a long time to create Batik, the lack of innovation in batik motifs, and the level of attractiveness of the younger generation as craftsmen fading, a solution is needed to solve these problems by applying computer application technology "Technocraft" (Creative Technology Batik Motifs from Digital Photos).

It aims to socialize and facilitate the community in the process of making batik motifs that are fast, efficient, and attractive by using the "Technocraft" application as an attraction for the younger generation of Jambi batik craftsmen and increasing the digital batik creative industry business that produces creative product innovations in Ulu Gedong Village, Jambi City.

Hanging out and learning with my 'Mengukir Asa' buddies

Assalamu'alaikum wr.wb.

It's been ages since I last chatted with my friends from mengukirasa.id.

Let me share the backstory of mengukirasa.id. I can still recall how it all started. Mengukir Asa is a community I established in response to some challenges in my village. One day, while chatting with parents, school teachers, Quran instructors, and other locals, I noticed a lot of concerns being raised. Many teachers and parents expressed frustration that even though the kids were in school, they were struggling to keep up with what was being taught, both in class and in the community.

This was a real challenge for me as a new educator, especially since my experience was mostly with kids in the city and overseas. Initially, I started offering free lessons at my home for kids interested in learning Calistung. However, I noticed that many were too shy to come over. So, I came up with a new plan. I thought, how can I get the kids to learn together with their friends? I reached out to the local Quran teacher since the kids in the village often gathered at her place for lessons. I asked her if I could teach in the mushola or at his house. Thankfully, she agreed, but with a catch. She wanted me to not only cover school subjects but also teach the kids about the Quran and Islam. I was totally on board with that!

I was really excited to have the chance to teach kids and bring some positive vibes into my life. At first, I handled everything myself, starting with the Quran and Islamic studies, and then I switched it up by teaching math, English, and other subjects. After a while, I realized it was a bit too much to manage alone, so I brought in two other teachers to help out.

I set up a schedule for classes three times a week, and we kept it going regularly until I had to leave to pursue my master's degree in Bandung. Right now, only the Quran teacher is still running the program, focusing solely on teaching the Quran and Islamic studies. The other two teachers are also busy with their own studies, so we haven't been able to team up again. I'm hopeful that once we finish our studies, I can jump back in and continue teaching.

A visit to Bosscha Observatory

Saturday-Sunday, March 25-26, 2023

Bosscha Observatory is a well-known historical site in Bandung, West Java. It features a range of telescopes, from tiny ones to massive ones. These telescopes help us observe celestial bodies that are invisible to the naked eye, making optical instruments essential. While Bosscha Observatory used to welcome the public, it’s currently closed. From what I’ve heard, it’s now only accessible to students conducting research or those with special permission to visit.

Alhamdulillah, my friends and I, who took an Astronomy class together, had the opportunity to visit Bosscha Observatory. Our visit aimed to see how the telescopes in Bosscha Observatory and also learn how to use the telescope.

The ride from ITB Ganesha Campus to Bosscha Observatory took us about an hour on our motorcycle. It was a bit of a tre, especially with the uphill roads, but once we got there, it was totally worth it. The place is really cool and stunning! 🥰🤗.

When we got to the spot, we were welcomed to check out the Bosscha Observatory and its impressive telescopes. From what I gathered, there are quite a few, including the Zeiss double refractor, Schmidt Milky Way, Bamberg Refractor, Goto, Unitron, solar, Stevia, and radio telescopes.

After our tour of the observatory, we had the chance to stay overnight in one of the houses on the property. Experiencing the night at Bosscha was something special. It gets pretty dark there since they keep the lighting to a minimum on purpose. If there are any lights, they’re covered so that they shine down instead of up, which helps keep the sky clear. This low lighting is really helpful for stargazing, as it reduces interference and makes the celestial views much sharper.

Here's some footage from the Bosshca Observatory 😍

The 8th International Conference on Mathematics and Natural Sciences

ICMNS 2023

This was my first experience at an international conference, and it was incredible! I was thrilled to take part since I had never been to anything like this before. I gained so much knowledge from the speakers and my lab mates about writing, research, data analysis, and presenting findings. A big thank you to the lecturers and colleagues who supported me; I hope to keep collaborating in the future!
